Skill Assignment #3: Timeline

This page was last modified: Sat Jan 19, 2019

For this skill assignment you will use Timeline.js to make a timeline that chronicles important developments in the Progressive Era. Rather than being due immediately, this skill assignment is not due until May 9th. You should begin your timeline in class and add important events, people, or movements to it as the semester progresses and you learn more about the Progressive Era.

Your timeline:

  • Should contain 20 events including major labor strikes, social movements, and legislative accomplishments.
    • Events can be drawn from class lectures, readings, and research.
  • An introductory slide/entry that contains a definition of the Progressive era. How do you define the progressive era? What were the major themes, events, and issues that dominated the era? The twenty events you add to your timeline should support this statement. Consider each event a piece of supporting evidence.
  • Each event’s entry must include an accurate date, a several sentence description, links to more information where relevant, and an image if possible.
  • Each entry’s description needs to address the 5 W’s:
    • who or what is this entry about?
    • what happened?
    • when did it happen?
    • where did it happen?
    • and lastly, but most importantly, why is this event important or significant in the history of the Progressive Era? In other words, why did you choose to include this particular event on your timeline? What makes it special or important?

Some useful tips:

  • Don’t change any of the headings in the spreadsheet template. These headings need to remain the same otherwise the software won’t know how to generate and display your timeline.
  • Don’t add blank rows between entries. This can mess up the template and cause bugs.
  • You must have a start and end date. If you don’t have a specific day and month, just input something like January 1 and the year and then enter a year in the display date. This allows the software to plot the date on the timeline but the only date that will be displayed is the one in display date.
  • Begin your assignment immediately! We’re introducing this tool early in the semester and the idea is to work on the assignment throughout the semester as you learn more about the Progressive Era. Waiting until finals week to begin your timeline will make this assignment harder – I promise.
    • But if you do wait to work on this and need a refresher on the tool, watch the video on the homepage of the Timeline.Js website. It walks you through the entire process.

Once you have finished your timeline, create a page on your WordPress site and embed your timeline. Submit the link to the page where your timeline is embedded through Blackboard in the Assignment for Skill 3.

This assignment, unlike most skills assignments, is due May 9th by 10am.
