Skill Assignment #7

This page was last modified: Fri Apr 5, 2019

The United States Census is the most valuable tool for historians trying to understand historic demographic change in the United States. Census recorders often captured information about a person’s nativity and race as well as their location which can be valuable tools for understanding where immigrants settled once they arrived in the United States and where in the world they were coming from at a particular time.

Using the datasets provided below, create at least 2 visualizations in Plotly. You visualization should focus on some aspect of the dataset. For example, you may want to generate a histogram (bar chart) that visualizes the presence of Irish vs German immigrants in Boston. Be sure to include captions, labels, and titles for each visualization.

After you have created two visualizations, add them both to Wordpress and write a blog post that discusses the visualizations, charts and graphs to visualize historical trends and data, and what you learned about Immigration in the Progressive Era. What did you learn from your visualization? What does it tell you about Immigration in the Progressive Era? What kind of literacy is required to engage with your visualization? Your blog post should be 500-700 words and written in a scholarly format. Be sure to be detailed in your answer and foreground the historical context.

Due before the start of class on May 2nd.
